European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
